About Bunyala Kingdom

The Banyala is one of the ethnic groups in Uganda. Before the 20th Century, Banyala were ruled under Bunyoro Kingdom. During that time the Banyala headquarters were located at Baale in the present Kayunga district. Historically, most Banyala were cultivators, fishermen and cattle keepers and believed to marry many wives and bear many children.

In the early 19′s the Banyala were conquered from Bunyoro kingdom by Buganda kingdom and brought under the rule of Buganda kingdom. This was done with support from the former British colonialist in 19th Century, and due to Buganda expansionist policy under the late king Muteesa I and Mwanga ll. After the 1900 agreement, the land that was previously occupied by the Banyala was brought under  the control of Buganda kingdom. Even the 1964 referendum on lost counties also left Baruuli and Banyala under Buganda.
